About

This Website & Me

My name is Nick Smith (nick@nicksmith.co.uk), I’m a web designer from London (UK). I work for Hoop Associates and am an organiser for London Web Standards. This site is mostly about sharing my discoveries, with a few examples of my work thrown in. I want to keep the content of my blog less technical and more design/human orientated. It’s a work in progress. Please email me for my CV or any more you’d like to know.

My Education

I have always had an interest in design and computing and my qualifications reflect this. At the University of Bradford I gained a 2:1 degree studying Cybernetics and Virtual Worlds. I also have a BTEC Diploma in Foundation Studies from Ravensbourne College of Design and Communication. Even my A-Levels included Psychology, Design & Communication and Computing.

Work

I have been designing websites in a paid capacity since 1997, doing one-off commissions throughout this time. For four years I was employed by a major department (one of eight schools) within a university to manage their website; editing, designing and advising on policy, all related to their web presence. Also, during my time there I gained experience as part of a small team conducting a research project into the business requirements of a content management system.

Accessibility and Web Standards

Having worked on accessible websites since 2002, everything I produce follows currently accepted industry practice. I read many blogs on web design related subjects and when I can I attend conferences such as @media.
