Chinese Herbal Medicine prescriptions consist of a mixture of herbs, which are administered in a variety of ways. The specific herbs used will depend on the condition and on the diagnosis in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) terms.
A prescription may be presented in the form of bags of mixtures of leaves, flowers, barks, roots etc. with instructions on preparation.
Such a mixture is to be boiled and drunk in a brew form. These brews may taste unpleasant, but they represent the best forms of administering the treatment, particularly in acute illnesses.
Herbal tablets may also be prescribed in some cases. Some people may be reluctant to accept the less pleasant tasting brews, in which case, the pills may be considered.
